RE—1
REMEMBER
WHY DOES GOD WANT US TO REMEMBER?
Anyone who feels neither responsibility towards the past nor desire to shape the future is one who forgets!
–Dietrich Bonhoeffer
REMEMBERING GOD’S FAITHFULNESS IN THE PAST:
1. ALLOWS US TO _________ ______ IN THE PRESENT
You may say to yourselves, “These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?” 18But do not be afraid of them; rememberwell what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. 19You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.Deuteronomy 7:17-19 NIV11
2. DIRECTS OUR ACTIONS IN THE FUTURE
34But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,35I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine...” 1Samuel 17:34-37 NIV11
HOW TO REMEMBER
1. _____________ IT DOWN!
“Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6to serve as a sign among you...”
Joshua 4:5-6 NIV11
2. ___________ IT TO OTHERS!
“...In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” Joshua 4: 6-7 NIV11
